A link-building workspace that remembers every anchor and every donor site

An internal tool for running link building across many sites: anchor lists per promoted URL, a shared base of donor sites, placement in one click with memory of what is already there, and a module on my own network of sites that publishes each link as soon as it is placed.

The challenge

What the client needed

Link building for several projects at once usually lives in spreadsheets: one tab of anchors, another of donor sites, a third of links already placed. Each new placement means cross-checking all three by hand.

The mistakes add up. One page gets the same anchor again and again, its anchor profile turns lopsided, or the same site links to it over and over while other sites in the network stay unused. With dozens of URLs and donor sites, nobody remembers what went where.

Promotion ran through my own network of sites, so every link also had to be published by hand on the right site. I needed a workspace where every promoted URL has its own anchor list, donor sites are shared across projects, repeats are visible before they happen, and a placed link reaches the site without manual work.

The approach

How I solved it

01

Category → project → URL

Projects are grouped by category, and each project holds the URLs being promoted, each with its target keyword. A URL without a keyword is tracked as an anchorless link. Every row shows how many anchors and links it already has.

02

Anchor lists with context

Anchors are pasted as a list, one per line. The clickable part is marked with [a]…[/a], so an anchor can be a whole sentence with the link inside it. One button links the selected text, another links every line. Duplicates are skipped, and each anchor shows how many times it has been used.

03

Placement that remembers

The placement screen lists every donor site with its PR and the number of links it already carries, and highlights sites that already link to this URL. Choosing a site opens the URL's anchors with how often each one has been used. With the one-use option on, an anchor locks after its first link to the URL, so every new link gets different text. One click saves the link over AJAX.

04

A history for every URL

Each URL keeps its placed links with anchor, site, PR and how many days ago the link went live, plus how long the page has been promoted. Deleting a site, URL or anchor cleans up the links that depend on it.

05

Publishing to the site network

A small module runs on every one of the 1,300+ sites of my network. When a link is placed in the workspace, the system sends it to that site, and the module publishes it. Choosing an anchor and getting a live link is one step, with no logging in to each site.

See it in action

The product

One-use mode: anchors already used for this URL are locked, fresh ones are ready to place.
Donor sites with PR and load; sites that already link to this URL are highlighted.
An anchor list per URL, with the link marked inside each sentence.
Every promoted URL of a project with its keyword, links and anchors.
The link history of a URL: anchor, site, PR and how long each link has been live.

The outcome

What the client got

  • One place for anchors, donor sites and placed links across all projects.
  • With the one-use option on, each anchor goes out once per URL: the tool locks it after the first link.
  • Sites that already link to a page stand out, so new links go to sites that don't link there yet.
  • Unused anchors are visible at a glance, which keeps the anchor profile varied.
  • Every promoted URL has a full history of where its links are and how long they have been live.
  • A placed link goes live on the network site on its own, without opening that site's admin.
